St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): Seventeen individuals from St. Kitts and Nevis will be travelling to the Republic of China (Taiwan) at the start of the fall semester.

These seventeen university students received scholarships through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF).

Eleven received MOFA scholarships, and six received ICDF awards.

Fifteen of the 17 students will be pursuing Bachelor’s Degrees, and two are pursuing doctoral studies.

During the ceremony to congratulate the awardees, Ambassador Michael Lin urged the recipients to focus not just on their studies but be open to the culture of Taiwan.

“I would like to encourage all scholarship awardees to make the best of your time in Taiwan. To not only enrich yourself in your academic pursuit but deepening your understanding of Taiwan’s outstanding environment, but also spend some time experiencing the culture, the food and the scenic beauty of Taiwan,” said Ambassador Lin.

Minister of Education Jonel Powell, emphasized the importance of maximizing this opportunity, especially during the financial restraints because of COVID-19.

“In normal times opportunities like these are scarce and are coveted and the competition for which is extremely high, worse now while we are in the middle of a global pandemic where finances and other resources are tremendously scarce, we are still grateful to be able to have these opportunities for our people.”

In his congratulations, Prime Minister Dr the Hon Timothy Harris reported a challenge faced when students return after completing their studies to realize that they have another option in creating job opportunities for themselves.

“One of the challenges which we face is that [people] go abroad to study and every time they come home it is that they are looking for employment instead of creating employment. Neither of them is wrong; it’s a choice. But as we look into certain areas, we understand that in certain disciplines, we have adequate supply in the country and in certain areas, we have limitations. It is a personal choice.”

Most awardees of MOFA Taiwan Scholarship have not yet determined their field of study, because the scholarship first provides them with a year of Mandarin studies before applying for a degree program. The only exception Mr Amory has already learnt Mandarin before.
