St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN)—The Nevis Bureau of Standards Building Project at Pinneys Industrial Site, funded by the US Government, has begun site preparation for the project.
Hon. Spencer Brand, Minister of Physical Planning and Environment in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA), said the completion of the project will make a significant advancement in food and nutrition safety on Nevis.
“We are here at the Pinney’s industrial site, where I am indeed delighted to signal the start of the Nevis Bureau of Standards construction project. This is a project that was gifted to the people of Nevis from the United States government and the people of the United States. This is a project being implemented through the U.S. Southern Command Facility, and the U.S. government, through the Southern Command Facility, would have awarded that contract to Texel Incorporated out of Puerto Rico, and Texel would have also partnered with Affluent Homes here on the island of Nevis. This is indeed a tangible gift to the people of Nevis to the tune of US$2 million. The Nevis Island Administration’s input was the site on which we are now standing, and that is valued at over EC$500,000. This is an important and critical project for the island of Nevis because we feel that on completion of this project, we will be able to enhance our food safety and all the products that we provide here on the island of Nevis for the people of Nevis.”
On completion, the facility will be a level 2 Bio-hazard facility, the second in the Caribbean region.
Minister Brand expressed gratitude to Brian Dyer of the Nevis Disaster Management Department (NDMD) and Stuart LaPlace of the St.Kitts – Nevis Bureau of Standards for assistance in bringing the Nevis Bureau of Standards Building Project to fruition.
