(Trinidad Express) – The Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) says formal confirmation from e TecK has provided Hilton Trinidad & Conference Centre employees with important assurances concerning their jobs.

The union said yesterday the assurances covered continuity of service, salaries and benefits, union representation, the continued operation of the hotel and Hilton’s continuation as hotel manager.

However, the CWU said it will remain vigilant in protecting the rights and interests of every worker and ensuring that the commitments now formally placed on record are honoured “in both word and practice”.

In a statement yesterday, CWU secretary general Joanne Ogeer said the union had received formal correspondence from e TecK confirming completion of its acquisition of Hilton International Trinidad Ltd and the execution of a new hotel management agreement with Hilton.

The union described the commitments contained in the correspondence as “clear and significant”, particularly for workers who have faced months of uncertainty over what the restructuring of the hotel would mean for their employment.

According to the CWU, the transaction is not expected to result in any break in employment, disruption of hotel operations, reduction in workers’ terms and conditions or displacement of the existing industrial-relations framework.
