Department of Agriculture conducting school drives to promote 27th Annual Agriculture Open Day to children

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The annual event held to showcase local produce and products and allow local vendors to generate income, is making a comeback after being shuttered for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 27th Annual Agriculture Open Day will be held on April 28 and 29 from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m, traditionally held at the Department Of Agriculture at La Guerite.

The Open Day will be held under the theme, “Enhancement, Innovation And Sustainability: Agriculture And Fisheries Our Priority.”

To build awareness of the event’s return, the Head of Media and Communication Unit in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources, Chaira Flanders, began a school visit campaign to reignite students’ interest in the event.

Students from various schools are the main visitors of the Agriculture Open Day throughout its existence.

“We thought that it would be a good idea as a Ministry to ensure that the children get to learn more about the Agricultural sector, which also includes the fisheries as well. And so today (April 12), we came to the Louisa Grant Pre-School in Conaree, and we were able to interact with the children, and we taught them a few lessons as well. And of course, they answered a few questions, and we’re so excited just like the students and the teachers who got to learn so much about the sector,” Flanders explained.

“One of the main important takeaways from this was for them to know that we have a petting zoo that is going to be at the Agriculture Open Day as part of the Livestock Divisions display. And so we’re going to be going to other schools as well all across the island for them to also be a part of this experience.”

Tricia King, a representative from the Department of Marine Resources, said the school drives are also geared toward introducing the concept of the Blue Economy to young children.

“This is all in aid of getting them really involved in what the Blue Economy is about and also to encourage them to attend Agriculture Open Day.”

Individuals interested in having a booth at the open day should register at the Department Of Agriculture La Guerite, the Department Of Marine Resources, the Ministry Of Agriculture, on the 3rd Floor of Government Headquarters and the Basseterre Public Market.
