Deputy Prime Minister Richards absent from Cabinet for months

By Devonne Cornelius

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): Deputy Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis Hon. Shawn Richards confirmed that he has been absent from Cabinet for the past two months.

Richards made that revelation on Wednesday, March 30 when he appeared on ‘The Narrative’ hosted by Calistra Farrier of Grenada.

“To the best of my knowledge, the Cabinet has been functioning, and I said to the best of my knowledge because I personally have not been to Cabinet in about two months now but that is a totally different issue. It is a principle position as to why I have not been attending Cabinet…”

Deputy Prime Minister Richards insists that his absence from Cabinet is not affecting the governance of the country. He said he is up to date with matters pertaining to his ministries and would, from time to time, receive calls from the Prime Minister asking to be briefed.

His confirmation of absence from Cabinet follows questions raised by citizens of the country as well as St. Kitts Nevis Labour Party Leader Dr. Terrence Drew about the status of Cabinet amidst the ongoing disagreement between Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris, Deputy Prime Minister Richards, and Premier of Nevis Hon. Mark Brantley.

On March 21, 2022, Dr. Drew told WINN FM that he is concerned that the Cabinet may not be meeting regularly and called upon Prime Minister Harris to address the allegations.

WINN FM contacted Prime Minister Harris on March 22 who dismissed the allegations and said “Cabinet has been very productive…”, and said Dr. Drew “is very badly advised”
