textbooks, uniforms, and examination fees throughout their high school journey, as
well as their tenure at Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC) and the Nevis Sixth
Form.
Flow Saint Kitts and Nevis hosted a recognition ceremony under the theme, ‘35 Years
of Investing in Our Youth, Transforming Lives Forever’, at the Solid Waste
Management Corporation Conference Room on Thursday, 7th September 2023. The
event included previous and current Flow scholarship winners, parents,
representatives from the Ministry of Education, and Flow.
Speaking at the ceremony, Flow Country Manager, Lorraine Mitchell remarked, “It is
with a deep sense of pride and satisfaction that our company continues to support the
scholarship program in collaboration with the government and other stakeholders, and
I congratulate this year’s awardees. As good corporate citizens we must be invested
in the future leadership of our Federation and ensure that we play our part in assisting
our young people to reach for their dreams.”
The Scholarship Program and Award Ceremony are part of Flow’s commitment to the
sustainable development and upliftment of youth in the Federation. With the
cooperation of the Ministry of Education, the company awards scholarships based on
outstanding academic achievement and good moral character.
The Chief Education Officer, Mr. Francil Morris on behalf of the Honourable Dr
Geoffrey Hanley, Minister of Education et al remarked, “For over 35 years, your
company has served as a ‘beacon of hope’, a catalyst of change, a true champion for
empowering youth to achieve their goals. It is no secret that Flow’s commitment to
education mirrors that of the Ministry of Education and together we will continue to
play an important role in shaping our country’s future.
Since the inception of the program in 1988, hundreds of students have been awarded
scholarships and have gone on to make significant contributions in many industries,
including but not limited to banking, education, law, and politics.
The feature address was delivered by Mr. Curtis Martin, a former speaker of the
National Assembly and former Vice President of Human Resources at Cable and
Wireless Saint Kitts and Nevis, and one of the first scholarship recipients in the
program.
“Several years after receiving the scholarship, I sought a summer job at Cable and
Wireless. I counted the coins, swept the floor, carried messages, did bookkeeping,
and stayed late. I acted as though I owned the company,” remarked Mr. Martin.
Mr. Martin recalled the country manager’s presentation about possessing positive
attitudes.
“The company loved how I worked so much that they ear-marked a position in the
Accounts Department once I had finished school. However, teaching is my first
passion, and I received a transfer to the Human Resources Department to live out this
passion. My new role as a Total Quality Control Facilitator brought several training and
experiences that has enabled me to facilitate the training of people. Now fast forward
to today, I am one of the best trainers in the Federation. Why? Because Cable and
Wireless Communications (CWC) invested money in me. So, I want to let the record
show that CWC is a solid contributor to nation building,” proclaimed Mr. Martin.
