God will decide on the next party leader – Mitchell

ST GEORGE’S (CMC): Leader of the main Opposition, New National Party (NNP), Dr Keith Mitchell, under pressure to step down and allow for the election of a new leader, says his support for the new party leader will be guided by God.

“I will listen to my God in this respect! No one will force Keith Mitchell … NNP means too much to me,” Mitchell told a news conference called to outline the activities marking the party’s 40th anniversary.

“Therefore, when I go forward and say this is the person I am supporting, it comes from my belly. I am not playing games with this country’s future. I will not play games, and no one could expect me to play games with the future of this country,” said Mitchell, who founded the party.

Mitchell recalled his decision to return to Grenada in 1984, saying he has not regretted that decision despite giving up a job that was offering him a lucrative income.

“You know something friends, I have not regretted one minute of it. I am at peace, I am happy having served Grenada, having given my all.

“I was not perfect, I made mistakes, but I believe that I have affected the lives of a lot of people, and I go to bed feeling proud of the contribution that I have made to my country,” he added.

The NNP which lost the last general elections in June 2022, is set to hold an overdue convention later this year, where a new party leader is expected to be elected.

But Mitchell has been under pressure to name the date for the convention with at least two Opposition legislators indicating a willingness to vie for the position.
