St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): A massive 7.2 earthquake hit Haiti Saturday morning, causing major damage to the island nation’s Western Region.
The United States Geological Survey said the quake struck five miles from the town of Petit Trou de Nippes in the western part of the country, about 80 miles west of Port-au-Prince. Seismologists said it had a depth of seven miles. It was felt as far away as Jamaica, 200 miles away.
Officials are currently mobilising a response to affected areas but little has been reported on injuries or deaths. Unverified Social media posts show major displacement in town and many buildings reduced to rubble.
Haiti is still putting pieces back together 11 years after an earthquake killed 250,000 people and left more than 1.5 million residents displaced.
