St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): Mas troupe “Ultra Carnival” will not be participating in the 2022-2023 St. Kitts-Nevis National Carnival Street Parade. Ultra Nation issued a statement on Wednesday, August 17 informing its revelers and by extension the community of the circumstances which led to the decision made.

The Mas troupe blamed the ongoing global challenges with sourcing materials as one of the core issues that led to the difficult decision.

“Putting forth a mas band is just not feasible in the midst of the supply chain disruptions, minimal options for interregional travel or shipping and inflation which led to the increased cost of Carnival materials.”

“While it is tough to imagine yet another year without the highly anticipated Ultra Nation Carnival road experience, it is difficult to present the high-quality product that Ultra Nation has grown to love under these conditions. With the St.Kitts-Nevis National Carnival coinciding with the Christmas holiday season disruptions and delays are inevitable and are expected to be exacerbated with the current global economic conditions.”

“We know that this isn’t the news that you want to hear but we value our revelers too much to put forth anything less than what we are known for. We thank you for your kind understanding. Your support during our five years on the road means the absolute world to us. We hope we can see you again sometime soon, signed Ultra Carnival.”

The statement from Ultra Carnival has generated extensive feedback on social media from suspected revelers. For the most part, they have expressed how disappointed, sad and heartbroken they are by not having the opportunity to celebrate with “Ultra” in the upcoming Carnival Season. Some, having expressed understanding for the decision, said “Ultra has made a wise decision. In addition, an individual suggested that the organizers keep it simple with a branded “Ultra” shirt with music and drinks. Another person in particular, proposed that organizers consider three r’s; recycle, renew and reuse. Meanwhile, an ardent reveler called on the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis to provide duty-free concessions on carnival materials. However, some individuals said they will join another mas group until “Ultra” returns.

“Ultra” has dominated the streets with glamorous, high-fashioned costumes, innovative ideas and great party energy. For four consecutive years, the troupe copped the title “Sugar Mas Troupe of the Year.” In the 2019-2020 Carnival season, “Ultra” also captured the awards for Queen of the Band, King of the Band and the Largest Troupe.

The “Ultra” road experience has not been held for the past two Carnival seasons as there was a cancellation of events due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
