St Kitts and Nevis (WINN): A new medical emergency fund has been introduced in the Conaree Community Healthcare Programme to help individuals who are seriously ill.
Community Project Organiser, Mr Delwayne Delaney told WINN FM that the fund is now officially open for donations. The aim is to have each person in Conaree donate EC $5.00 per month to the emergency fund. There are three persons selected to collect the donations. Donnis Samuel is the collector for individuals living in the vicinity of the Conaree Preschool road to the Conaree Wesleyan Holiness Church, whilst from the church to Poland Hill, Juanita Hamson is the designated collector. Kimara Hamilton is the collector for Conaree Flats.
The community was first sensitised on the medical emergency fund initiative during “Bummers Social and Meeting” held at the Conaree Community Centre on Saturday night, May 14.
Delaney said the fund is a means of assisting persons in the village who may need medical assistance in short order. He suggested, “rather than raising funds each time, they can have something that they can turn to for immediate relief or assistance. When people are at that stage, time is of utmost importance and having to wait a week or two to plan something and then to get other things in place, it takes away from the person who is ill; from a favourable standpoint.”
The inspiration for the emergency fund came about after the Conaree Community came together to raise funds for fellow villager, Jahmarie Rogers who at that time was battling lung cancer and needed financial assistance to travel overseas.
Delaney believes that after Rogers’ situation, persons are more enlightened or awakened to the fact that people cannot sit back and blame the healthcare system in the country or raise funds after someone needs help; but instead take a proactive approach of mobilising resources together to bring about change.
