St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The United Nations held a historic UN 2023 Water Conference – the first in almost 50 years – and has been described as a watershed moment for UN Sustainable Development Goal 6: ensuring the sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
The UN has stated that water is a dealmaker for the Sustainable Development Goals and for the health and prosperity of people and the planet. But the progress on water-related goals and targets remains “alarmingly off track”, jeopardising the entire sustainable development agenda.
The Minister of Public Infrastructure, Energy and Utilities et al., the Hon. Konris Maynard, addressed the United Nations Water Conference on the Midterm Comprehensive Review of the Implementation of the Objectives of the International Decade for Action, “Water for Sustainable Development”, 2018–2028 which run from March 22-24 in New York.

Advocates for water security and climate change await the outcome of the Conference, which would include new commitments, pledges and actions by Governments and all stakeholders towards achieving SDG 6 and other water-related goals and targets, compiled in the Water Action Agenda.
As with actions to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, the hope is that the commitments and pledges do not just move to placate advocates but to move forward to actionable change.
