Multi-million dollar restoration of Charlestown Methodist Church officially begins

By Devonne Cornelius

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The multi-million dollar restoration project of the Charlestown Methodist Church officially began on Thursday, November 03, 2022, with a groundbreaking ceremony on the grounds of the church.

According to Project Manager Rev. Steadroy Pemberton, Phase 1 of the project includes gutting all wooden structures within the building, including basement support structures such as beams and columns, and the roof. There will be an excavation of certain areas in the basement floor to lay a steel frame to support the structure. Wooden columns, the main floor, and the roof will be erected upon the steel frame using greenheart wood to preserve the church’s architectural charm and historical value.

Careful restoration of the 178 year old physical structure will also be part of phase 1, which prepares the church for worship in 48 weeks. Rev. Veronica Williams-Gumbs officially declared the start of the project.

Special recognition was given to the Nevis Island Administration, the business community, local banks, and members of the Methodist Church for their overwhelming support for the project. The concept to restore the Charlestown Methodist Church came about in 2013, when the initial cost was set at $1.5 million but now stands at $6.5 million due to the rising cost of materials.

Phase 1 will cost 3.5million while phase 2 is estimated at $3 million.

The electrical work will be done by Craftsmen Construction while the contractor for the project is Jasper Stapleton.

The Charlestown Methodist Church is making a special appeal for financial contributions towards the project. Interested donors may contact the church office at 469-1558 or 469-5286 or send an email to nevismethodist@gmail.com
