St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN)—Following a significant party shake-up one month after her resignation as Political Leader of the People’s Action Movement (PAM), Natasha Grey-Brookes withdraws her candidacy for St. Christopher 1.
“Wisdom teaches us to plant your seeds where they will grow, in fertile soil where genuine care, hard work, and dedicated service can bear real fruit for the community. Consequently, I have officially withdrawn my candidacy for constituency number one East Basseterre on behalf of the People’s Action Movement. I have written in this regard on 28 August 2026 to the party’s chairman-elect and general secretary.”
In a statement shared on August 31, 2026, Grey-Brookes implied she experienced pushback as Political Leader of the People’s Action Movement.
“Leadership is a sacred trust, but true leadership requires the freedom to lead and to execute a vision that genuinely serves the electorate. When a political leader finds themselves straitjacketed at every step, their hands tied, their vision constrained, and their capacity to act restricted, it ceases to make sense to fight battles within a structure that resists genuine movement. Leadership without the autonomy to deliver meaningful progress is merely a title, and I have never been interested in titles for the sake of position. I have always been a worker and someone who executes, whether as an ordinary member, assistant general secretary, treasurer, deputy chairperson, deputy political leader, general secretary, or as political leader. Any environment that one works in must be conducive to effective service for the people.”
Grey-Brookes outlined the work that she did as PAM representative for East Basseterre.
“Serving the people of East Basseterre has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. Together, my team and I, along with East Basseterre, have built a vibrant community movement grounded in action, love, and constant presence. I set about to nurture our youth by establishing a book club to foster literacy alongside annual back-to-school drives, Easter initiatives, and joy-filled Christmas parties. I have always cared for our vulnerable by organising regular community soup kitchens, hosting seniors’ breakfasts, and distributing essential food hampers. I am about uplifting families. I have hosted community days, delivering clothing drives, and launching community cleanup campaigns to revitalise our neighbourhoods block by block. Natasha Grey Brookes has built deep connections. I met you at your doorsteps during countless canvassing walks, listening to your stories, overcoming hurdles together, and winning hearts through true service. My canvassing from 4th Street to Southeast Peninsula has been ongoing for the past two and a half years. I believe that connection with the people should be outside an election cycle.”
Grey-Brookes said her work in East Basseterre will not be halted because she decided to withdraw.
“While a recent family emergency caused a brief setback in my organising timeline for my annual back-to-school drive, which is in its seventh year, my commitment to our children remains steadfast. This coming Wednesday, I will be hosting a pop-up school supplies distribution in Taylor’s Village at 5 p.m. The following weekend, I will host another back-to-school initiative to ensure our young people have every tool they need to shine as bright sparks they are. My commitment to the people of East Basseterre has never been tied to a ballot paper or a party position. It is anchored in a genuine, lifelong dedication to seeing our community thrive. I remain fully invested in shaping a brighter, more inclusive East Basseterre, where every single resident, from our youngest children to our esteemed seniors, feels valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.”
While the former Political Leader and now former East Basseterre Representative has stepped down from her active role in PAM, she has not indicated whether this will be the end of her political career.
The People’s Action Movement is expected to hold a Special Council to replace Grey-Brookes in St. Christopher 1.
The Party is also expected to unveil its new Political Leader and candidates for the next general election during their upcoming convention on September 27, 2026.
