St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN) — The Nevis Disaster Management Department (NDMD) is continuing their work during the Atlantic Hurricane Season with the inspection of the Emergency Shelters on Nevis and the training of staff in COVID-19 protocols.
Director of the Nevis Disaster Management Department is Brian Dyer who spoke with WINN FM on Tuesday, October 06, 2020.
“The Emergency Shelters, we usually inspect those very early in the year during the month of March and April because at that time we would get the report and submit to the relevant authorities to ensure the repairs are effected before we publish the list. This year because of COVID-19, we did the inspection in two batches. It’s the Public Works Department because they have a technical team to effect the repairs but also the department of Community Development because they are the entity in charge of the emergency shelters on Nevis mainly because we utilize the community centers”.
The NDMD Director added that once the repairs are done, the completed list will be published once approved by the Nevis Disaster Management Department and the Department of Physical Planning.
Dyer said, “For this year, the shelter managers were trained with regard to the COVID-19 Protocols to ensure they know how to operate the temperature guns, and were trained in contact tracing and the required protocols of sanitization”.
In addition to the temperature guns, he added that the department has sourced face masks and hand sanitizers for the 24 Emergency Shelters.
The 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 01 to November 30.
