St Kitts and Nevis (WINN): In commemoration of International Museum Day 2022, the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society will be engaging students from various Primary Schools on Nevis in an afternoon of old time games and fun activities. The event is slated for Thursday May 19 on the grounds of the Museum of Nevis History.
According to a release from the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society, ” Every year since 1977 – on or around 18th May – participating museums plan events and activities related to the annual theme, engage with their public and highlight the importance of the role of museums as institutions that serve society and its development. This year, Nevis museums are celebrating the power of traditional games as a means of positive social interaction, cultural transference, and as a representation of the importance of family.”
Students will be engaged in activities such as Skipping with Vines, Dog and Bone, Brown Girl in the Ring, A Tisket a Tasket, Little Sally Water and more. The expectation is that the students will learn new games and in turn teach their friends, ensuring that traditional games live on for generations.
International Museums Day 2022 is dedicated to the “Power of Museums; the power of achieving sustainability, the power of innovating on digitalisation and accessibility and the power of community building through education. Museums are also an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures, and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among the people.
On Nevis, the museums include the Museum of Nevis History which is the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, the Sports Museum, as well as the Horatio Nelson Museum.
