Nevis: Swim To Win Program Underway

One of the coordinators of the exciting Swim To Win program, Teri Andrews, was happy to report on Sunday 6th September, that the program has indeed restarted.

The program commenced in January of this year and was followed up with a month of Sundays, in February.

Unfortunately, the program had to be curtailed, due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

However, the program’s restart, followed approval from the COVID task force and the organizers have to ensure that all concerned abide by the established safety protocols.

The program will now run through the months of September, October, and November, utilizing all of the Sundays.

There are some 48 registrants, which include children and parents.

Persons who missed the September sign up, can now register for October, at the Nevis Youth and Sports Department, or online at nevisaquaticandsailingcenter.com.

Lead Swim Instructor, Valerie Gregoire, indicated that there are some five groups, each with an instructor and two volunteers.

The participants have been separated according to their skill levels, into beginners, intermediates, and advanced swimmers.

They will be taught the five basic levels:

Front crawl,  Back crawl, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Endurance. They will be taught at their own pace of learning and will not be pushed.

They will not only be taught to swim but taught to swim properly.

The ultimate aim of the program is to train instructors and to teach people to swim; with the hope of one day incorporating swimming into the school curriculum.

‘It’s all about Fun, Family Time and Fitness,’ said Ms. Andrews.

The program also includes a sailing component, for those persons interested in learning how to sail.
