The Nevis Tourism Authority has launched a series of eco-initiatives to celebrate Earth Day and to help raise awareness of the importance of looking after the island’s natural environment.

The Nevis Tourism Authority has requested that all employers in the nation to allow their workers to finish an hour early on Earth Day (Thursday 22 April), and for locals to take part in helping to clean the island’s beaches, rivers and oceans, with the before and after imagery being shared on the @nevisnaturally Instagram page, to give an idea of the difference a collective effort can make.

Jadine Yarde, the CEO of the Tourism Authority, said: “The island’s vast natural environment – consisting of rainforests, a volcano, long stretches of beach and expansive green land – must be kept clean and protected to create a harmonious ecological balance. If we all work together, we can ensure our island continues to be safe, healthy and welcoming for people, flora and fauna. As an nation so proud of our island, it’s hoped that we continue to look after our surroundings forevermore and not just on Earth Day”

The Nevis Tourism Authority is also requesting that all Nevis businesses and homes turn their lights and appliances off for one hour from 6pm – 7pm, to reduce electricity usage and promote awareness of energy wastage in the home and workplace.

Jadine Yarde also said: “Turning all of Nevis’ lights off for one hour not only minimizes our electricity usage, but also symbolizes how important protecting our island is and how we have strength as one nation,”

From today through to 31st April, the island is running its annual month of tourism awareness activities, called Exposition Nevis, All Things Tourism. To mark Earth Day, a tree planting activity will be taking place at Pinney’s Park at 9:30am, with both Nevisians and visitors invited to join.
