St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): What is the likely impact of newly installed traffic lights on the flow of traffic in Central Basseterre?

Representatives from the Department of Public Works Mr. George Gilbert, Chief Engineer, and fellow engineer Mr. Livingston Pemberton talked about that issue on Monday’sTraffic Talk’ on WINN’s ‘Island Tea’.

Six of the seven intersections have traffic lights erected; however, they are not operational at this time, Pemberton stated.

When asked how intersections are chosen for traffic lights, Pemberton had this to say;

“It is based on scientific data. The government would have engaged a consultant, ADeB Consultants out of Jamaican and they would have conducted the traffic study… You would have had persons at each intersection, the persons would have been recording the flow of vehicles; where they were going; where they were turning and so you’d get numbers… Out of this data that is when [we] were able to determine where the actual traffic lights should have gone and the need for them.”
