St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN) — Political Leader of the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP), Dr. Janice Daniel-Hodge, is calling on the Premier of Nevis and his cabinet to implement immediate economic relief measures to assist the people of Nevis experiencing financial hardship.
The NRP leader issued the call via a message on Facebook on Tuesday, February 02, 2021, and delivered a letter to Premier Mark Brantley’s office asking him and his cabinet to consider the measures presented.
“I have asked the Premier and his cabinet to consider the following initiatives: 1. An immediate moratorium on disconnection of electricity services; 2. An immediate moratorium on disconnection of water services; 3. An immediate waiver on children’s school lunch fees; 4. An immediate waiver on business license renewal fees for Taxi drivers and tourism-related businesses; and 5. An immediate advance payment to workers who are awaiting severance payments,” the letter read.
Hotels and tourism-related businesses, mid-2020, laid off and made redundant hundreds of their employees as a result of the economic fallout brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
As at December 16, 2020, an estimated EC$1.2 million have been paid out in severance on Nevis, however, payments for ex-employees of the Four Seasons Resort have been delayed according to Brantley at his last press conference.
