One week out; no word on official election observers

By Devonne Cornelius

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): Despite confirmation by a Cabinet Press Briefing that regional and local observers have been approved to witness the upcoming general elections on August 05, 2022, no information has been forthcoming as to what body or organization would be monitoring the elections.

WINN FM contacted Supervisor of Elections Mr. Elvin Bailey to inquire about the status of the observers and he told us to contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Mr. Bailey said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs coordinates the arrival and departure of the regional observers.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was contacted and they said they are currently waiting for confirmation regarding the regional observers so that the necessary arrangements can be made. Foreign Affairs then disclosed that it is the Office of the Attorney General that is responsible for making the request for the observers.

WINN FM made several calls to Attorney General Vincent Byron’s cell but was unsuccessful. His office was contacted and an official there said he is not available. The official had no information on the status of the observers.

“The Cabinet approved for regional and local observers to witness the upcoming general elections on August 5, 2022,” a Cabinet Press Briefing said.

In 2020, the CARICOM Election Observation Mission was accepted to monitor the June 05, 2020, general elections.
