St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The St.Kitts-Nevis National Committee believes that the involvement of a steel pan competition “Panorama” during the annual Sugar Mas Festival is giving rise to a new wave of pan music and local pannists.
During the Thursday, December 15 edition of Island Tea, Co-Chair of the St.Kitts-Nevis National Carnival Panorama Competition, Mr. Cartel Forde said the pan groups are committed to the pursuit of improvement and skill development for this year’s extravaganza.
“Well preparations for Panorama have been very intense. We are trying to revitalise the image of the steel pan because as we know, steel pan was introduced in the early stage of Carnival. We had steel pan music, brass band, calypso and we just want [you] to know that we are still here and we are still kicking. So, it has been intense but enjoyable. The steel pan groups are ready, They are anticipating a great event.”
Forde said his committee, with assistance from Carnival Chairperson Shannon Hawley and Minister responsible for Carnival Hon Samal Duggins, has been working diligently to ensure a successful staging of the event.
Panorama, according to Forde, is an annual national steel pan competition that allows steel pan groups in the Federation to compete against each other and also be recognised not locally but regionally and internationally.
Seven steel pan groups consisting of approximately 220 individuals will be vying for the 2022 Panorama title. The groups are Young Vibrations Steel Orchestra, the Nevis Community Development Steel Orchestra, Poinciana Rhythms Steel Orchestra, Oualie Rhythms Steel Orchestra, the defending champions-EBJ Harmonics Steel Orchestra, as well as two new bands, Pan Vybz Steel Orchestra and Pan-Demic Steel Orchestra.
Panorama is slated for tonight, Friday, December 16 at Carnival Village where the winning steel pan group will receive EC $15,000. Admission to the event is EC $30.00.
