St Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The new Governor assigned to Anguilla is expected to arrive on the island in early September 2023.
During the Wednesday, May 31 edition of Talk Anguilla, Premier Hon. Dr. Ellis Lorenzo Webster informed the public that the new Governor Julia Crouch is currently in Moscow and an interim Governor will fill the post until she arrives.
“The next assigned Governor is right now in Moscow and will not be able to get to Anguilla until September. I think that timeline has been made public. So, in the interim, there will be an interim Governor, Paul Candler who is now the Director of the Overseas Territories and he will be coming, I think around June 23rd to take the post until our Governor gets here from Moscow.”
The decision of having an interim Governor has garnered much discourse among the Anguillan public. Host of Talk Anguilla, Keith “Stone” Greaves, questioned Premier Webster about the decision to have a senior British official to act as interim Governor when there is a local Deputy Governor in post.
In his opinion, the Premier said, having a senior British Official will bode well for Anguilla, especially as it tries to bring to fruition several projects and try to grapple with the rise in criminal activities.
“That is something that is determined in London, I presume. Certainly, the Deputy Governor made a statement because we’re going into the Hurricane Season and because Disaster Management is important; but again, I think that it is important that the U.K, this relationship with Anguilla, that they continue to have that kind of high-level representation here. We have a lot of things happening here Keith and in terms of the water network, in terms of the airport expansion, because of our fiscal stability. So, I think these are all necessary. In terms of national security, where we feel that there is that need right now to have that commitment from the U.K, that we will get the help necessary to curb the scourge of gun violence that raised its ugly head. For me, it’s a good thing” said Webster.
In December 2022, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office announced that Julia Crouch will succeed Dileeni Daniel- Selveratnam as Governor of Anguilla. Selveratnam departed the island on Thursday, June 01, 2023. She will serve as the Governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
