(WINN): St. John’s, Antigua – Police used tear gas against protestors on Sunday (August 8) to disperse the ‘Freedom Fighters for Antigua and Barbuda’ march.
Protestors gathered at the V.C Bird status downtown and were met by a heavy police presence.
According to Police, the Freedom Fighters March did not receive prior approval to conduct Sunday’s event.
Protestors amassed to contest several issues affecting Antigua’s community, including the mandatory vaccinations for COVID 19, the ongoing state of emergency and curfew rules related to the ongoing pandemic.
At the time of this report, one man was being detained by police.
Widely distributed video footage from Antigua shows protestors administering medical treatment to an injured man, erecting roadblocks, burning tires, and throwing projectiles toward law enforcement officials, as heavy smoke plumes from the tear gas fill the downtown streets forcing the protestors to disperse.
