Prime Minister Harris plans to increase Poverty Alleviation Programme on September 1

by Eulana Weekes

St Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The Poverty Alleviation Programme (PAP) will increase on September 1, 2022. This was announced by the Hon Dr Timothy Harris, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, during the People’s Labour Party Vision Centre opening in Constituency No. 2 on Thursday night (June 30).

“The $500 is making a difference in the lives of so many people. So many grandmothers and mothers are relying on the PAP; that is why I shall increase it.”

“Only the PLP ( People’s Labour Party) will keep the PAP going. I will not only keep it, but I shall increase it, and I intend to make it happen on the 1st of September. I see money coming.”

The increase in financial assistance through the program is incumbent on the PLP winning a majority of the seats in the upcoming general election and forming the government.

The Poverty Alleviation Programme was instituted in 2018 to support poverty eradication in St Kitts and Nevis by giving a monthly stipend of EC $500 to households whose gross monthly was less than $3,000.

“When we introduced PAP, it was about protecting you from the indignity of the harshness of life. It was about recognising that you need a certain minimum to be able to live on. It was to top you up so that you can do certain things for yourself, [like] pay your water bill, pay something against your house, buy your medication if need be. That is what it is about.”
