Representatives of the Caribbean Development Bank discuss the way forward for Geothermal Energy in Nevis

by Eulana Weekes

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): Representatives of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) are currently in the Federation to discuss the production of Geothermal Energy for the island of Nevis.

Attorney General, Hon. Garth Wilkin confirmed a meeting held on Wednesday, October 19.

Dana Clarke- Legal Counsel, and Christopher Straughn, Sustainable Energy Specialist, both of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and the Attorney General, met “to discuss the Federal Government’s support and legal logistics for Geothermal Energy production in Nevis.”

Wilkin noted, “If successful, the Geothermal Energy Industry will be a game changer for our people, economically and environmentally.” He added that “the Federal Government, in advancing its commitment to forge a path toward safe geothermal energy, has provided the requisite support to enable the Nevis Island Administration to access a Contingently Recoverable Grant through the CDB executed GeoSmart Initiative.”

The CDB’s GeoSmart Initiative provides grants to Governments in the Eastern Caribbean countries for early-stage exploratory drilling. The results from the exploratory drilling will help to determine the potential of geothermal production in those countries.

The Energy Minister, Hon. Konris Maynard, during the Prime Minister’s Press conference on October 17, said the probability of success is in the 90 percentile according to information from the experts.
