St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The members of Ruth Liburd Foundation, Inc, in collaboration with Chipeen Volunteer Center, have installed the first four Little Libraries.
Stocked with books of varying genres the launch formed part of Good Deeds Day on November 16, 2021.
“The Ruth Liburd Foundation is focused on positive change; it’s about getting better at getting better… We are realising the process of improvement is not one that occurs in isolation. And that is why the Ruth Liburd Foundation is also guided by the look, listen and learn approach,” said a presenter on behalf of Jean Herbert-Walters, founder of the Ruth Liburd Foundation, Inc.
The libraries are currently installed in the Cayon & Keys communities, and anyone interested will have the opportunity to borrow, return, and care for these books at any time of the day.
“As it relates to the Little Libraries project. I think it is something that is quite timely; it’s not often that we hear about books and reading books. Somewhere along the way, we seem to have lost the appreciation for books with the development of the internet and social media… But there is still a tremendous need for libraries and commend the foundation on this particular effort,” said Jonel Powell, Minister of Education, Youth, Sports, and Culture.
Minister Powell commended the initiative as an excellent opportunity to go back to basics in a world reliant on technology.
The current little libraries are the first installment; more communities in SKN will benefit from this project in the future.
The Sugar Mill Real Estate at Cliffdwellers sponsored a similar initiative in Nevis last year, November 2020, where they installed eight little libraries throughout the island.
