St Kitts and Nevis (WINN): Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, the 8th Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (UWI) was bestowed with the 2021 Martin Luther King Jr. Day Peace and Freedom Award by the National Action Network (NAN).
Reverend Al Sharpton, civil rights activist and president of the NAN led the virtual award ceremony and commended Sir Hilary for personifying everything the MLK Award stood for.
Sir Hilary offered brief remarks after receiving his award.
A remarkable 8-year-old from Gaithersburg, Maryland Cavanaugh Bell, was also among those honored on Martin Luther King Day on Monday (Jan. 18).
He was awarded for using his own money to create care packages with toiletries and groceries for elderly people, which then grew into a food pantry fueled by donations, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the USA.
In his response, Bell eloquently spoke about motivating young people to rise up and be leaders for change.
