St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN)—St. Kitts and Nevis officially joined the global dialogue on artificial intelligence by participating in the Youth and AI Summit held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on International Youth Day.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in a statement highlighted the Federation’s commitment to positioning its youth at the centre of international digital policy.
The event took place at the UN Headquarters on August 12, 2026, aligning with the global observance of International Youth Day.
Convened under the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” the summit focused heavily on how AI can support Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while protecting digital rights.
Over 600 young leaders, delegates, and advocates gathered to deliberate on the future of automation and digital safety.
The primary outcome of this session was the drafting of a Youth-Led Declaration on AI Policy and Governance.
This policy framework serves multiple purposes:
- The declaration directly feeds into upcoming UN digital governance structures, ensuring small-island developing states like St. Kitts and Nevis have a say in international frameworks.
- The dialogue heavily incorporated recent International Labour Organisation (ILO) data warning that 6.1% of jobs held by youth (ages 15–29) face exposure to AI automation.
Delegates advocated for rapid upskilling and continuous learning initiatives.
UN Assistant Secretary-General for Youth Affairs Felipe Paullier emphasised that youth must move away from “tokenistic consultation” and instead be active architects of global AI design.
Complementing this global push, the local St. Kitts-Nevis Youth Summit (SKNYS) also took place, running across both islands from August 10-14, 2026.
The summit worked in tandem with international dialogues to build civic leadership, advance technical research, and deliver a structured youth agenda directly to the local government.
