St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): In commemoration of World Environment Day 2023, the Department of Environment on Nevis engaged all major supermarkets in St.Kitts and Nevis to participate in its promotional activity, “No Plastic Bag Mondays.”
The activity is slated to take place each Monday in the month; June 05, 12, 19 and 26.
World Environment Day 2023 is being held under the theme, “Solutions to Plastic Pollution.” The theme proves timely as St.Kitts and Nevis seeks to prepare residents for the implementation of a ban on single use plastics.
Rather than plastic bags, shoppers are encouraged to use boxes, reusable shopping bags or paper bags.
Traditionally, individuals will be provided a shopping bag, when he or she goes to the supermarket. However, during the month-long campaign, supermarkets will be selling reusable shopping bags at a minimal cost.
During the Wednesday May 31, 2023 edition of InFocus, Director of the Department of Environment -June Hughes admonished citizens to do what was done in the past, by taking a cloth bag to the supermarket when shopping.
The hope is that the “No Plastic Mondays” activity will trickle down to other Mondays and eventually each day to phase out the use of single use plastics.
