St Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The ten-member contingent from the local security forces, dispatched to volcano-ravaged St. Vincent and the Grenadines on May 29,202, returned home on Sunday (June 20) to a warm reception.
The members of the Police and Defense Forces were assigned to the Regional Security Forces (RSS) Mission to assist in security and humanitarian work in the aftermath of the eruption of the Le Soufriere Volcano on April 9, 2021.
A military parade was held in St. Vincent and the Grenadines in honor of the troops of the RSS mission on Thursday (June 17).
The April 9 explosive eruption of the volcano was the first in 40 years, it sent ash plumes 10 km into the sky. Other eruptions followed with pyroclastic flows, ash plumes, earthquakes in April. In May, the volcano has been quiet but risks remain.
Close to 20,000 people were reportedly forced to leave their homes in search of shelter.
