St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots remain on a losing streak after falling short in their Caribbean Premier League match against the St. Lucia Kings on August 19, 2025, at Warner Park.
Despite the team’s third consecutive loss before a home crowd, it delivered a nail-biting performance that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
The closely fought match saw moments of brilliance from both bat and ball, but the Patriots team was ultimately unable to channel their efforts into victory.
Having won the toss and opting to bowl first, the Patriots’ bowlers fought valiantly, picking up crucial wickets, but a few costly errors in the field allowed the Kings to achieve a total of 200 runs for eight wickets in the first innings. Scoring big for the Kings were Roston Chase 61 from 38 deliveries, Johnson Charles 52 from 28, and Tim David 46 from 23 balls.
Bowling for the Patriots, Waqar Salamkheil, Fazalhaq Farooqi and Kyle Mayers each collected two wickets.
In the chase, the Patriots’ side looked very promising, thanks to a spirited half-century from captain Jason Holder- 63 from 29 balls, bringing up his fastest CPL 50 in 23 balls.
Another middle-order batsman, Navian Badaisee, scored 50 from 36 balls to help keep the Patriots hopeful, but in the final over of the chase, the Kings responded strongly with the ball, restricting the Patriots to 197 runs for six wickets.
Bowling for the Kings, Khary Pierre, David Weise and Roston Chase each collected two wickets.
Despite the defeat, Patriots captain Jason Holder praised the team’s fighting spirit, saying that the performance showed promise.
“I think each game, we’ve shown signs of improvement. The batting is coming along slowly but surely. I think the positive thing for me today was to see the young players thriving under pressure. Young Badaisee struggled at the start, but he kept his composure and was able to carry us and give us the hope of actually winning the game. But unfortunately, he got off on the last ball, but that is how cricket is played. I think the important thing is for us to learn from it and keep building. I think we’ve been doing a reasonable job so far. Obviously, we haven’t gotten across the line in these last three encounters, but having said that, I think there is still a lot of cricket to be played in this tournament, and we’ve shown positive signs that we can compete, and I’m sure we can get across the line.”
Responding to a question posed to Holder by WINN FM, “What do you think was the key turning point that decided the game?” Captain Holder assessed the team’s bowling and batting performances and highlighted the need for sharper execution under pressure if the side hopes to turn its fortunes around.
“It’s hard, man. There are a few things that we probably could have done better in the field. In terms of bowling, maybe execute one or two overs a little bit better. I had a big over, although I had a wicket against Tim. In the batting department, we probably lost two or three wickets in a cluster, which probably set us back a little bit further, but look, there are a few things that you can look back at in hindsight and pinpoint, but cricket is played in the moment. We’ve got to be able to think a little bit better under pressure and then deliver.”
With upcoming fixtures in other islands, the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots team is determined to end the streak and secure a much-needed win.
