(Trinidad Express) – Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela have agreed to establish a joint commission aimed at breaking years of diplomatic and technical inertia and advancing cooperation on key issues affecting both countries.

Minister of Foreign and Caricom Affairs Sean Sobers said the technical working team will allow both governments to identify priorities and begin delivering on mutually agreed areas in the interest of their people.

In a telephone interview with the Express yesterday, Sobers said the commission will address issues spanning several ministries, including matters that had been left “dormant and untouched” long before the United National Congress (UNC) administration took office last year.

He said public servants who formed part of the T&T delegation to Venezuela, including permanent secretary and head of the Foreign Service Randall Karim, would have made contact with their Venezuelan counterparts to begin the technical work required to establish the commission and get it operational.

“We will work it out; what we prioritise will be actioned and we will get the work done, and I am certain that both countries are poised for huge progress on several varying fronts,” he said.

Sobers also disclosed that an invitation has been extended to Venezuela’s Minister of People’s Power for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Felix Plasencia to visit T&T.
