St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): For the first time in history, the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis will host the distinguished Caribbean Conference on Comprehensive Disaster Management.

The Caribbean Conference on Comprehensive Disaster Management is a premier event held by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency. It runs from December 2 to 6. International and regional disaster management stakeholders will gather at the St. Kitts Marriott Hotel to discuss disaster impacts and explore innovative strategies to build disaster resilience in the region.

A statement penned to WINN FM by the Nevis Disaster Management Department confirmed the event’s hosting.

One of the main highlights of the 2024 conference will be the School-Based Multiple Hazards Exhibition, scheduled for Wednesday, December 4th, 2024, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Malcolm Guishard Recreational Park in Nevis. This hands-on disaster preparedness affair aims to empower the community in resilience and disaster risk reduction.

Nevis Disaster Management Department said, “This initiative, known as the School-Based Multiple Hazards Exhibition, assigns a specific hazard to each school in Nevis to promote awareness, boost preparedness, and build resilience among students and the broader community to effectively address various natural threats. At this much-anticipated event, primary schools on Nevis will showcase creative exhibits and simulations of eight hazards: earthquakes, landslides, tsunamis, volcanoes, hurricanes, floods, storm surges, and fires.”

All simulations will be done under the guidance of the Nevis Disaster Management Department in alignment with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency’s principles. The simulation will highlight safety measures before, during and after natural hazards.

The exhibition will feature the St. Kitts Nevis Robotics Association and youths from St. Lucia and the Turks and Caicos Islands to emphasise regional collaboration.

The Nevis Disaster Management Department said the involvement of youths from other islands “will add a dynamic layer to the exhibition, demonstrating how technology and youth engagement can transform disaster preparedness and resilience.”

The Caribbean Conference on Comprehensive Disaster Management will be held under the theme: “CDM Road to Resilience: Checkpoint 2024 – Leveling Up for a Dynamic Future”.
