St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): Mr. Rustum Southwell, the son of St. Kitts and Nevis National Hero Sir Caleb Azariah Paul Southwell will serve as the ninth Chancellor of Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Mr. Southwell’s appointment was approved by the Dalhousie Board of Governors during its meeting on June 27, 2023. Southwell’s installation is expected to take place in November 2023 as part of the Fall Convocation ceremonies. He will serve for a three-year term.
Speaking about his new appointment, Southwell said “I am very honoured,” It is a chance for me to share some of my own wisdom, if you want to call it that; reflecting on community and speaking to the youth who are coming up, the next generation we’re mentoring. Dalhousie has an important mandate in education and community, and I am eager to play a part in moving that work forward.”
During his tenure as Chancellor, Southwell is expected to oversee Convocation ceremonies, serve as a member of the Board of Governors and advocate for Dalhousie University across the country.
Southwell has served the Halifax community in several capacities and was duly recognised for his achievements, with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 2018 from Dalhousie University.
Speaking about Southwell, acting President and Vice-Chancellor of Dalhousie University, Mr. Frank Harvey said Southwell “knows what it means to help build a supportive community that empowers possibility, and that allows everyone the opportunity to participate to their full potential.”
Cheryl Fraser, Chair of the Dalhousie University Board of Governors said, “Serving as Chancellor is an ideal appointment for someone of Mr. Southwell’s impressive character, someone who has spent their life and career helping to lift people up so [that] they can grow, thrive and succeed.”
The St. Kitts native, Rustum Southwell will succeed Hon. Scott Brison as Chancellor of Dalhousie University.
