St Lucia to end State of Emergency, COVID-19 protocols extended

(Loop News) Saint Lucia will no longer be under a State of Emergency as of October 16, 2021, Prime Minister Philip J Pierre announced in an address to the nation Thursday evening.

Saint Lucia has been under the State of Emergency since 2020, which was instituted by the former United Workers Party Government.

Then-Prime Minister Allen Chastanet said the SOE was needed for the Government to take certain measures such as implementing a curfew to help reduce the level of transmission of COVID-19.

However, the Saint Lucia Labour Party contested that the same measures can be implemented under the existing COVID-19 Prevention and Control Act and saw no need for the SOE.

“On October 16, the State of Emergency will end and will not be reinstated,” Prime Minister Pierre declared.
