St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) is making another appeal for people to properly dispose of used oils in order to protect their health and the environment in which they live.
The Collections Manager of the SWMC raised the issue on Tuesday’s edition of Waste Matters on WINN’s weekday morning show “Island Tea” hosted by Azem Bailey, Jade Johnson and Kevon Hanley.
Used oils are classified as hazardous waste, unfit for the original purpose, and toxic to human health and the environment. St. Kitts and Nevis is among small island states pursuing the environmentally sound disposal of used oils generated from machinery, the hotel and tourism trade, and homes.
Ms. Lake noted that some people are cooking food, for sale, with used oil and she reminded that there are existing penalties.
She also reminded listeners and viewers that the SWMC collects used oil.
