Team Nevis wins the Nevis Mango Festival Chefs Cooking Competition

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): Team Nevis, represented by Margaret Castro and Dellon Parris copped the top position at the Nevis Mango Festival Chefs Cooking Competition on Sunday, July 07, 2024, at the Malcolm Guishard Recreational Park.


They received US$ 1,000.00 as their winning prize.


The other teams represented were second placers Antigua and Barbuda, represented by Chef Ronald and Chef Jean Pierre; the United States of America represented by Chef Terry, and Chef Wilroy and St. Kitts, represented by Chef Kashiana and Chef Kanini.


The teams participated in two rounds of competition. In the first round, the teams prepared an appetiser and plated it, in an allotted time of 30 minutes. The chefs were required to include a noticeable portion of protein, plantain, avocado, beets and mango as the main ingredient.


The teams also prepared an Entreé, utilising ingredients from a mystery basket in the second round. They were given an allotted time of 45 minutes to prepare the meal and plate it. The ingredients in the mystery basket were chicken breast, dried coffee, ripe plantain, orange, raisins, spinach and coconut.


For the appetiser, Team Nevis prepared a mango and papaya shred, with a mix of Asian fusion sauce, tamarind, oyster, and peach sauce, with dried shrimp for protein. It also included avocado with basil mango sauce.


For the main course, Team Nevis prepared a spinach salad, with mango basil dressing, and a couscous made up of chicken with teriyaki sauce, garlic, onion, coffee and ginger. On the bottom, was beet and yogurt pureé, while on the top was a salsa made of mango green, mango yellow, hearts of palm, coconut and fresh radish.


The judging criteria included


Taste of Flavour- 25 points

Presentation- 25 points

Creativity- 20 points

Team Coordination 20-points

Use of Ingredients- 10 points

Total 100 points


There was a panel of four judges including Head Judge- Sean Benjamin from the United States, Jahdel Allen from Golden Rock Inn, Charlie Amory from Amory Enterprises and Lisa Paff from Lime Beach Bar and Tours.


The 10th edition of the Nevis Mango Festival commenced on Thursday, July 04. It climaxed on Sunday night, July 07 with a Mango Concert, with live performances by Denise Gordon, Abena Amory, Xman and the Xfactor Band, Green House Band, Mark and the IV Band, Regal Band, and Garlic and the Upper-Level Band.


Scores of individuals were in attendance, including Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew and Deputy Prime Minister Dr Geoffrey Hanley.
