Basseterre, St. Kitts (Tropical Shipping): Through its annual Education Scholarship Programme, Tropical Shipping awarded ten (10) hard-working students from across St. Kitts with financial scholarships.
The handover ceremony for 2021 was delayed due to the COVID-19 community spread prior to the official closure of the 2020 – 2021 school year. However, it was important that the 2021 recipients be recognized and presented with their deserving awards.
Over the course of three days, Monday February 14 to Wednesday February 16, the students that are now in their first year of high school were honored at their various institutions with brief ceremonies.
Students from the Charles E. Mills Secondary School, Verchild’s, Saddlers Secondary, Cayon High, Basseterre High and Washington Archibald High were all awarded. The students comprised of Zeniqua Liburd, Rasani Pemberton, Tashiem Woodley, Adesah Dunrod, Karencia Williams, Jahkoi Rasbatt, Azaniah Johnson, Stephanie Kawall and Icalia Maynard.
The ceremonies received full support from the Ministry of Education where Permanent Secretary Mr. William Vincent Hodge and a number of other Education Officers were present for the handovers. Along with Assistant Manager of Tropical Shipping Mrs. Abygail Caines-Leader, the students and their peers were offered words of advice, encouragement and commendation. Parents in attendance were applauded and urged to remain a strong support system.
About the Tropical Shipping Education Scholarship Programme:
Since 2017, through collaboration with the Ministry of Education, primary schools across the island are invited to nominate up to two (2) deserving sixth grade students who have showcased diligence and consistent success throughout their primary school career. The submissions are then taken before a Selection Committee where the final recipients are chosen. The number of awardees continues to grow as Tropical Shipping’s parent company Saltchuk has increased its initial donation towards the effort. In the first year 4 students were awarded, which has gradually grown to 10 students in 2021. Each student receives aid towards school books, supplies and uniforms to the value of US$250.00 per student.
Tropical Shipping hopes to continue the annual award for the 2021 – 2022 school year and invites all primary schools to participate in the nomination process through the auspices of the Ministry of Education.
