St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): Twenty families on the island of St. Kitts were given the opportunity of being homeowners. A House Allocation Ceremony was held on Friday evening February 4 at the new Stapleton Housing Development location in St. Peters.
During the ceremony, Mr. Nigel Hyliger gave an overview of the Stapleton Town Housing Project.
“A request was made by the Minister of Human Settlement for the Corporation to raise the standards in constructing these buildings to include three bedroom units for the benefit of larger families living in densely populated conditions. These units are expected to occupy regular land area, but with one of the bedrooms occupying the lower level, as it may not be possible for each occupant to climb the stairs when it’s time to retire for rest.”
He said, “careful thought was given to the final design submissions based on feedback received from previous homeowners who hinted that they would have preferred if a further room was included along with the relocation of the laundry which was initially located underneath the internal staircase. Although we have observed previous homeowners were very creative in the use of their internal spaces, to make them livable and very comfortable, the Corporation’s Design Team took the initiative to provide solutions that have improved conditions tremendously.”
Mr. Hyliger, therefore, commended the Ministry of Human Settlement and the Housing Corporation for their high level of efficiency and for raising the standard where the new houses can be referred to as condominium suites.
The monthly payments for the new homes range from EC $925 to EC $1,700.
Remarks were delivered by the National Housing Corporation General Manager, Mr. Lisford Isaac, Minister of Human Settlement and representative for Constituency 8, Hon. Eugene Hamilton and Prime Minister of St.Kitts and Nevis, the Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris.
A housing recipient, Ms. Shona Billinghurst, expressed appreciation to all who made the housing development possible and urged other recipients to meet their monthly obligations.
