St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): National Assembly is set to be held on June 12, 2023.

Two Bills will receive first readings, the Firearms (Amendment) Bill, 2023 and the Freedom of Conscience (Cannabis) Bill, 2023.

The mover of the Bills, Prime Minister, Hon. Dr Terrance Drew.

According to the government information service, the Firearms (Amendment) Bill, 2023, will amend the Firearms Act, increasing the maximum penalty if someone breaches the Firearms Act to 25 years of imprisonment with or without hard labour upon conviction.

The change to the Act is a result of the recent string of gun violence the Federation has been experiencing recently.

The Freedom of Conscience (Cannabis) Bill, 2023 facilitates personal cultivation by adults of cannabis for private use in a secured area within a private residence and the personal possession and use of cannabis in certain public places within the designated smoking areas for the enjoyment of a person’s freedom of conscience, including freedom of thought and religion.
