St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN) – In the vein of Culture, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Jonel Powell during the February 16 broadcast of Leadership Matters announced the collection of a US$100,000 grant for the development of a cultural secretariat aimed at the preservation and education of our intangible culture.
“I am happy to announce that we have recently set up an ICH Secretariat, which is [an] Intangible Culture Heritage Secretariat and with the assistance of UNESCO once again and a grant of some $100,000 US dollars we are beginning to build out that to safeguard our culture in St. Kitts and Nevis,” Powell shared.
The first phase of the preservation and education of our intangible culture is the establishment of the Secretariat and Powell also mentioned the start of cultural education seminars to start as early as next Wednesday (February 24).
“There are a number of seminars that will begin to take place at the Great House up at Shadwell I think next Wednesday and those are really to educate the persons within our cultural fields on why we need to protect our culture and just what aspect we can protect and how we protect them. And so the seminars will carry out instructions on broom making, and on culinary skills… but as well as to educate on some of our folklore,” said Powell.
