Vessel travelling from St. Kitts to other Caribbean destinations sank off the coast of Montserrat

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): A four-member party which consisted of Captain Basil, a Greece national, and three French nationals were sailing from St. Kitts to Guadeloupe with onward travel to Martinique when the vessel they were aboard began to take in water and eventually sank.

The unfortunate incident occurred about seven nautical miles North of Montserrat early Friday morning, May 19, 2023.

According to a report by the Royal Montserrat Police Force, a rescue party was dispatched to the scene following a Mayday call. The vessel, a white yacht – 41-foot-long, by the name of Palma, was under distress with five persons and a dog onboard.”

Information from the Montserrat Police also disclosed that the vessel was “taking in water at an alarming rate”, and the rescued individuals were instructed to abandon the sinking vessel.

The MV Heliconia Star took the rescued team back to Port Little Bay. They received immediate medical assistance and were provided with temporary accommodation until their departure to Guadeloupe on May 20.
