St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN) – As the four-day Easter holiday weekend is fast approaching, the Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) is advising the general public that there will be no waste collection on Good Friday (April 15).
“We do not do any collections on Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Those three holidays we do not work at all; we will be working on Easter Monday even though it is a public holiday, Solid Waste [will] work on Easter Monday,” said Valentine Heyligar, Collections Supervisor with the SWMC.
“Those areas who get collections on Fridays, their garbage will be collected on Friday along with the Thursday normal collection.”
Some of the areas include Market Street, Dorset, Soho, Freeman’s Village and others.
Additionally, the landfill will be closed on Good Fridays; on Easter Monday (April 18), the landfill will be opened from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m., with waste collection continuing as scheduled.
Public Relations Officer with the SWMC urged those affected by the temporary change to take special notice.
“Please put out your waste on Thursday so that it is collected; otherwise, you will have to hold that [waste] until the following week, and of course, you do not want waste in your until that following week. Especially now [Easter] when people are not really eating chicken but the fish… so put your waste out on Thursday.”
If individuals and households miss this opportunity, their waste collection will not occur until the following week.
The Collections officer also announced changes to collection days in Sandy Point and the St. Johnson’s Villiage and Macknight areas.

“When the truck has passed, please do not put out your garbage and then say the truck did not collect your garbage. A lot of people are guilty of that; they wait until the truck pass, put out their garbage and then say the truck didn’t collect their garbage.”
