St. Kitts – Nevis (WINN): With the first week of October behind us, people are now casting their gaze on the traditional holiday season that has, in recent years, featured discounts from the 17 percent VAT that applies to everyday transactions with a few exemptions.
So will there be VAT discounts this year? A year that COVID-19 has taken a heavy toll on the economy?
The question was put to Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris at the recent edition of Leadership Matters.
” .. I will formally allow for a discussion on this next Monday and therefore perhaps by next Tuesday, one can say,” the prime minister responded while pointing out that the country was in a difficult period with limited cash flow.
” Therefore the kind of benefits that we would have offered in a season of high inflows would not normally and could not be prudently made available,” he explained.
“But we will look at it in fairness to the public, in fairness to the fact that persons had become accustomed, we will give it some consideration and then make a determination, ” the prime minister assured.
