KINGSTON, JAMAICA – The West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) congratulates the Guyana Harpy Eagles on winning the West Indies Championship title and salutes Leon Johnson, captain of the Guyana Harpy Eagles, on his retirement from first-class cricket.
The Guyana Harpy Eagles secured the title with a win over the Leeward Islands Hurricanes on Saturday, April 1, 2023, having stood atop the points table since the first round. It was however a crucial match, which came down to just 17 runs in the end, giving Guyana enough (84 points) to stave off the challenge from the Windward Island Volcanoes who finished second with 74.2 points.
It was also the final match for Leon Johnson, captain of the Guyana Harpy Eagles. The 35-year-old Guyanese, made his debut for Guyana at 16 years old. He went on to captain West Indies at the U19 World Cup in 2005/06, and later play 9 Tests and 6 ODIs for the senior West Indies team.
Johnson has now led Guyana to six regional titles, making him the most successful regional captain.
