Jamaica (Jamaica Observer) – Jamaica’s women’s 4x100m team booked their place in the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan after finishing second in their first round heat on Saturday’s first day of the World Relays in Guangzhou, China, running 42.51 seconds.
The quartet of Tina Clayton, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Tia Clayton and Shericka Jackson was second behind Spain, which surprised the field to win with a national record 42.18 seconds, as both teams took the automatic qualifying spots in Sunday’s final.
The top two teams in each of the four heats in the 4x100m, 4x400m and mixed 4x400m relays qualify for Sunday’s final, where the winners will take home US$40,000, and also book qualification to the World Athletics Championships.
Belgium, the USA, Great Britain, Germany, Canada and the Netherlands are also into the final on Sunday.
