Houthi-controlled territory, shaded pink, covers much of western Yemen including Sanaa and extends south along the Red Sea coast towards the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Purple-striped areas mark contested territory around the boundaries of Houthi control. The enlarged lower map highlights gains made by a Houthi offensive along the southwest coast in September, with Taiz shown on the front line. An inset globe locates Yemen. Homes are scattered across the slopes, but many stand abandoned after families fled to escape the fighting.
